Jodi's Tears - Real or Fake?

As expert witness on domestic abuse was on the stand

When the witness about domestic violence was asked if she'd been a witness for a man in a domestic violence case, Jodi Arias leaned on her head and did an arm hand block on her neck. She is doing a lot of eyeglass adjustment where she lifts her eyeglasses up and puts them back down as she did last week. This eye glass adjustment is only done when there is something going on that she really does not like seeing. Remember the timing is the tell. Also notice how full her cheeks are and how her lips are pressed indicating she's trying to keep emotions in. Notice the timing of this tell is during the expert witness on domestic abuse discussing isolating the victim. Also for the first time I'm seeing extreme fatigue. (The day following this testimony court is canceled as Jodi has a migraine so I think I was seeing the pain buildup here.)

Jodi did a pretend head rest a lot today where she pretended to rest but did not fully rest head on her upraised fist symbolizing her wish to be fighting.

When the expert witness said, “and sometimes it can be sexual abuse it does not have to be forceful,” Jodi brought her hand as if she was going to brush back her hair and scratched her ear and spent quite a long time scratching around the ear which indicates that the idea that she was sexually abused even this conversation coming up was disturbing to her and she didn't like hearing it again.  First she looked as the word sexual abuse was stated then she brought her right hand and arm across her body to scratch her left ear.

When expert witness said, “abuse can be forceful, sexual abuse can more physically forceful and violent “Jodi did a significant eyeglass adjustment holding her hand to the glasses to partially block our view of her.

This is interesting the expert witness is talking about “insidious sexual abuse” and Jodi Arias is resting her head on her upraised hand and she looks tired and rather bored on one side of her face is showing asymmetry. She has a bizarre vacant unfocused eye and a face that that is like melted wax (what I call a face with no affect or facial tension and the other side of Jodi’s face is totally different.) In fact the other side is angry with a glare at the eyes with the tightening and pulled in around the lips on that side. This means there is conflict between her neocortex and her limbic brain. She feels anger but feels she must dissociate from it.
When expert witness is talking about sexual humiliation and degradation from the abuser, Jodi shows mouth cues of sadness and distaste. Look at her mouth at 3:43 PM again very asymmetrical.  See anger on one side of the face of a real anger and Apsley disconnection on the other.

Does coconut water help in diabetes

This post is dedicated to one of my friend +Ben Erl , he asked me how coconut water can benefit in diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin or to use the insulin produced in the proper way. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death among Americans; over 15 million Americans suffer from one form or another of this disease.
Coconut water

The coconut “water”, inside the nut, is sterile, and safer to drink than the often microbially-infested surface waters. The mineral profile of the coconut water (not coconut “milk”, which is made with pulp) is almost exactly the mineral electrolyte profile your cells need for health — potassium, calcium, sodium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, manganese, copper along with vital amino acids. Although “fatty”, coconuts contain no cholesterol.

Coconut water, that delightful clear liquid extracted from green coconuts extremely healthy. Fresh coconuts are an alkaline pH food, and so they can help combat the modern acid-producing life-style which eats away at your circulatory system and organs. Coconuts are also a high-fiber, low-glycemic food and they have a low carb profile along with their protein. Every ounce of shredded coconut contains about 5 grams of fiber. Your quota of fiber should aim to be around 30 - 35 grams, daily.

It has a lot of nutritional properties that can help in the treatment of various ailments. Among these nutritional benefits of coconut water, is the control of diabetes. Yes, coconut water is good for diabetics because it is rich in a lot of nutrients that are required by diabetics to keep their sugar levels in control. Let us discuss it here, how coconut water is good for diabetics.

Improves your blood circulation
Due to improper blood circulation in their body diabetic persons generally experience some discomforting symptoms like numbness in their feet, kidney failure and even loss of vision. Consumption of coconut water, has the ability to improve the blood circulation within the body. It helps to widen the blood vessels (which get constricted due to the formation of plaque within them), and thus helps the blood to flow smoothly through them. This, in turn, gives relief from some of the symptoms and helps to fight against atherosclerosis.

Helps Controlling your weight
Drinking coconut water has the ability to satiate your hunger, and prevent you from eating in excess. Not just that, it has tremendous nutritional values of minerals, salts, good fats and absolutely no cholesterol. One important thing that diabetics are always required to keep a watch on, apart from their sugar intake, is their weight. Plus, it's extremely palatable. So you can relish the goodness of a glass of coconut water as a midday snack when your stomach grumbles in hunger.

Improves Metabolism
Coconut water can be included in diabetics diet plan as it has some properties that enable a faster metabolic rate in your body. When your metabolic rate increases, your body is digesting and burning the sugars fast. As a consequence, the insulin in the blood is also getting burned faster. This means you have more energy in your body. So, coconut water
is a favorable inclusion that diabetics can make in their diet, at least twice a week.

It is Low in Carbs and high in fibre
Coconut water is the perfect example of a food item that qualifies as a low carb and high fiber one, especially for diabetics. You can enjoy a glass full of coconut water and also indulge yourself in the super soft and delicious flesh of a young coconut.

Provides vital nutrients
Coconut water, in addition to the above-mentioned uses, also contains minerals, anti-oxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, etc. all of which are necessary for diabetics to control their sugar level and also their weight. When you drink coconut water, and your metabolism rate increases (as mentioned above), your blood also begins to carry oxygen more efficiently. When your blood has enough oxygen, you have more energy and you can carry out your daily activities with ease.

Naturally anti viral
Coconut is a potent anti-viral food and it is proving to be helpful in combating yeast-infections and the Epstein-Barr like virus which is associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, too. Lauric acid and caprylic acid are the most effective, active anti-virals.

Those were some of the major advantages that the consumption of coconut water by diabetics can lead to. It is a delicious cold beverage that you can enjoy at any time of the day. However, remember that anything taken in excess can cause problems later on. So, even if you know that coconut water is good for diabetics, drink it in moderation, and after the consultation of your doctor to reap its many benefits.

Why should you eat banana

Banana is a fruit loved by all, children and adults alike love to eat this delicious and firm creamy flesh which is wonderfully sweet and packed with nutrients. Since bananas come neatly covered and wrapped in natures packing, they are very portable. One of the great things about bananas is that it is not only delicious but is also cheap and available throughout the year unlike the other fruits.
Bananas are elliptically shaped fruits "prepackaged" by Nature. The banana plant grows 10 to 26 feet and belongs to the same family as the lily and the orchid. The cluster of fruits contain anywhere from 50 to 150 bananas with individual fruits grouped in bunches, known as "hands," containing 10 to 25 bananas. Bananas abound in hundreds of edible varieties that fall under two distinct species: the sweet banana (Musa sapienta, Musa nana) and the plantain banana (Musa paradisiacal). Sweet bananas vary in size and color.

Bananas can be eaten in their whole form, sliced into fruit salad or mashed and added to banana muffin, banana bread and banana cake recipes or you can try your own banana recipes. Frozen bananas can be added to smoothies in place of yogurt or ice cream.

Bananas have two times as many carbohydrates as an apple, five times as much Vitamin A and iron and three times as much phosphorus. In addition, bananas are also rich in potassium and natural sugars. Creamy, rich, and sweet, bananas are a favorite food for everyone from infants to elders. Sports enthusiasts appreciate the potassium-power delivered by this high energy  "Super fruit".

If you don't find these reasons enough to enjoy these beneficent bananas

Let us discuss the benefits of eating bananas here
according to whfoods.com
eating bananas can give you these proven benefits.

Cardiovascular Protection from Potassium and Fiber
Bananas are one of our best sources of potassium, an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Since the average banana contains a whopping 467 mg of potassium and only 1 mg of sodium, a banana a day may help to prevent high blood pressure and protect against atherosclerosis. The effectiveness of potassium-rich foods such as bananas in lowering blood pressure has been demonstrated by a number of proven research studies involving more than 40000 peoples .

In addition to these cardiovascular benefits, the potassium found in bananas may also help to promote bone health. Potassium may counteract the increased urinary calcium loss caused by the high-salt diets typical of most Americans, thus helping to prevent bones from thinning out at a fast rate.

Soothing Protection from Ulcers
Bananas have long been recognized for their antacid effects that protect against stomach ulcers and ulcer damage. In one study, a simple mixture of banana and milk significantly suppressed acid secretion. In an animal study, researchers found that fresh bananas protected the animals' stomachs from wounds.

Bananas work their protective magic in two ways: First, substances in bananas help activate the cells that compose the stomach lining, so they produce a thicker protective mucus barrier against stomach acids. Second, other compounds in bananas called protease inhibitors help eliminate bacteria in the stomach that have been pinpointed as a primary cause of stomach ulcers.

Improving Elimination
Bananas are a smart move if you suffer from elimination problems. A bout of diarrhea can quickly deplete your body of important electrolytes. Bananas can replenish your stores of potassium, one of the most important electrolytes, which helps regulate heart function as well as fluid balance.

In addition, bananas contain pectin, a soluble fiber (called a hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract and ease constipation. Bananas also contain resistant starch, but this amount varies depending on their degree of ripeness. In their lesser ripe stages, bananas score as low as 30 on the glycemic index (below 50 would be considered low). In their riper stages, this number usually rises to a moderate level in the 60's. All of the above features help place banana in a more favorable digestive light than might otherwise be expected for a sugary fruit.

Protect Your Eyesight
Data reported in a study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology indicates that eating 3 or more servings of fruit per day may lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older adults, by 36%, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.

Researchers studied 100,000 women and men and evaluated the effect of their consumption of fruits; vegetables, antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E and carotenoids on the development of early ARMD the illness associated with vision loss

Food intake information was collected periodically for up to 18 years for women and 12 years for men. While, surprisingly, intakes of vegetables, antioxidant vitamins and carotenoids were not strongly related to incidence of ARMD, fruit intake was definitely protective against the severe form of this vision-destroying disease.

Three servings of fruit may sound like a lot to eat each day, but by simply tossing a banana into your morning smoothie or slicing it over your cereal, topping off a cup of yogurt or green salad with a half cup of berries, and snacking on an apple, plum, nectarine or pear, you've reached this goal.

Build Better Bones with Bananas
Enjoying bananas frequently as part of your healthy way of eating can help improve your body's ability to absorb calcium via several mechanisms.
Banana

Decrease the risk of colon cancer
Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound called a prebiotic because it nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria produce vitamins and digestive enzymes that improve our ability to absorb nutrients, plus compounds that protect us against unfriendly micro-organisms. When fructooligosaccharides are fermented by these friendly bacteria, not only do numbers of probiotic bacteria increase, but so does the body's ability to absorb calcium. In addition, gastrointestinal transit time is lessened, decreasing the risk of colon cancer.

Fights digestive deases
Green bananas contain indigestible (to humans) short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are a favorite food of the cells that make up the lining of the intestines. When these cells are well-nourished and healthy, the body's ability to absorb nutrients such as calcium can increase dramatically.

Research published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences underscores just how much bananas can improve nutrient absorption. In this study, 57 male babies (5-12 months) with persistent diarrhea of at least 14 days duration were given a week's treatment with a rice-based diet containing either green banana, apple pectin or the rice diet alone. Treatment with both green banana and apple pectin resulted in a 50% reduction in stool weights, indicating that the babies were absorbing significantly more nutrients.

Also, to check how well their intestines were able to absorb nutrients, the babies were given a drink containing lactulose and mannitol. Lactulose is a compound that should be absorbed, while mannitol is one that should not be. When the intestines are too permeable, a condition clinicians call "leaky gut," too little lactulose and too much mannitol are absorbed. After just one week of being given the green banana-rice diet, the babies' were absorbing much more lactulose and little mannitol, showing that their intestines were now functioning properly.

Protects against chronic disease
Some banana cultivars are also rich in pro-vitamin A carotenoids, which have been shown to protect against chronic disease, including certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. How to identify which bananas contain the most carotenoids? Check the color of their edible flesh. Bananas whose flesh is more golden contain the most carotenoids.

Promote Kidney Health through Regular and Moderated Intake
Research published in the International Journal of Cancer suggests that regular, moderated consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, can be protective against kidney disease. The conclusion drawn by the researchers: routine and moderated consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, cabbage and root vegetables, may reduce risk of kidney cancer by 40%.

Why these foods? Cause, bananas and many root vegetables contain especially high amounts of antioxidant phenolic compounds. Cabbage is rich in sulfur compounds necessary for efficient and effective detoxification of potential carcinogens. This mixture of phytonutrients may have been particularly helpful in protecting kidney function.

The results of this large population based prospective study (13.4 years) of 61,000 women aged 40-76, show that women eating more than 75 servings of fruits and vegetables per month (which translates into 2.5 per day) cut their risk of kidney cancer 40%. Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective. Women eating bananas four to six times a week halved their risk of developing the disease compared to those who did not eat this fruit.

Salads, eaten at least once a day, were associated with a 40% decreased risk. Among vegetables, frequent consumption of root vegetables and white cabbage offered the most protection, providing a 50-65% decrease in risk.

Individual Cautions

Bananas and Latex Allergy
Bananas contain substances called chitinases that are associated with the latex-fruit allergy syndrome. If you have a latex allergy, you may very likely be allergic to banana. Processing the fruit with ethylene gas increases these enzymes; organic produce not treated with gas will have fewer allergy-causing compounds. In addition, cooking the food may deactivate the enzymes.

Natural treatment for grey hair

What causes premature graying of hairs at young age, and how can I stop it?

Having white hair at a young age can make you stand out from the crowd. Most people's hair turns grey or white as they age, But some people start seeing their first white hairs before they're even out of their thirties. there are several reason behind this premature graying let us discuss some here.

1) One of the main reason is hair follicles malfunction. It just stop to produce melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. The pigment in your hair is actually melanin, like the pigment in your skin. And the white hairs are simply ones that don’t have that pigment.

2) Genetics is another one of the likely causes of gray hair. Ask your parents or other relatives about family history of premature white hair. If your mother or father's hair turned white at an early age, you may be genetically programmed for premature graying. Your genes determine when production of melanin stops, and If you inherited your gray hair, there might not be a way to prevent white hair from growing in the future.

3) Vitamin deficiency is also a reason in premature graying, especially a lack of Vitamin B. If you eat a balanced diet and don't suffer from malnutrition, you may have pernicious anemia. In this form of anemia, your body is unable to absorb Vitamin B-12 from the bloodstream. So consult your doctor for treatment.

4) If you suffer from hypothyroidism and your thyroid fails to produce enough thyroid hormone, this may cause prematurely graying hair, according to the University of Michigan Health System. A blood test can diagnose hypothyroidism and you can take medication to make up for the hormone your body doesn't produce naturally.

5) Smoking: Some researchers like Dr. J. G. Mosley who studied patients in the Leigh Infirmary in Lancashire, England in 1996, noticed a correlation between smoking and premature graying of hairs. Though Dr. Mosley could not prove that smoking caused gray hair, he did note that the smokers in his survey turned gray at an earlier age.

So how can u turn the table, you can certainly try to prevent white hair!

This is what I recommend:
Take charge of your health Keep fit and stay healthy, your body will work most efficiently when you are healthy, and if it’s running efficiently, it can do all the normal processes (like growing hair) better. You can try to prevent white hair by eating right, refraining from smoking and avoiding stress.

They say stress is one of the causes of gray hair, so keep yourself fit, healthy and stress-free to prevent white hair. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamins and minerals, including iron, copper, vitamin B and folic acid. Eat lots of fresh, green leafy veggies.

Deal with the grays you have
While you might not be able to prevent white hair completely, you can find ways to make yourself look good with the ones you’ve got. White and gray hairs can be beautiful, so don’t be afraid to flaunt your look a little bit! As long as you have a youthful glow, your white hair won’t make you look old. A streak of white or gray hair can look really chic and lovely! If you’re uncomfortable with the whites, you can look into hair dyes that will let you cover up the gray and match the darker hair you have on the rest of your head.

14) Boil ribbed gourd in coconut oil and use this for daily to prevent premature greying.Always keep the scalp and hair clean

15) Combing hair regularly is a good habit, as this is another way to massage hair tissues and enhance hair growth. In addition, combing with a wide-toothed brush separates tangles and prevents hair fall and damage.

Moreover, hair is weakest when wet so, soak it dry with a towel before combing. Similarly, combing entirely dry hair is as harmful as combing wet hair. Use a comb which has soft bristles also make sure that you use it regularly as improper use of comb may also damage your hair at times.

16) Regular conditioning of hair is essential these days as hair is most exposed to pollutants, dirt, sun, wind and rain, and harsh chemicals. Covering up your hair on a sunny day will reduce browning and drying of hair. Regular conditioning will improve and strengthen the look of your hair. Hair conditioners are of two types: Natural and synthetic.

Natural and organic conditioners are less harmful and can give an additional glow to your hair.

Synthetic may be pathetic, yes it may cause some damages to your hair due to the chemicals present in it.

A doctor might be able to help you find the potential causes of gray hair and figure out which one is the reason for your problem. He or she can probably suggest some better ways to prevent white hair in the future.

Health benefits of coconut water

Coconut water could potentially be the greatest energy drink in the world, to top it off, it’s all-natural. Coconut water contains more potassium than the majority of energy drinks. The chloride it holds is at 118g, and it’s natural sugars extent to about 5mg.

Coconut water is the juice or liquid inside an immature green coconut and it is best to drink when it is more than 5 months as the water will have a bitter tinge if consumed earlier. Its water is one of the nature’s most refreshing drinks, consumed worldwide for its nutritious and health benefiting properties.

The coconut palms grow abundantly along the coasts of tropical environments.Botanically, coconut plant belongs within the Arecaceae family of palm trees and has the scientific name: Cocos nucifera.

The coconut tree has been called the "Tree of Life" for its uncanny (nearly miraculous) healing properties and usefulness. A study of the coconut tree reveals an almost supernatural evolution to become one of the most useful species of plant life known to man.

Coconut palm flourishes well along the costal tropical environments. A coconut tree may yield several hundred tender nuts each season. Different species of coconut palms are grown all over the tropics. Naturally, their taste and flavor of water show variations according to saline content in the soil, distance from sea shore, mainland, etc.

tender coconut
The palm can yield 150 to 200 coconuts a season and each coconut contains 200ml to 1000ml of water depending on its cultivar size and type. This water is rich in vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, enzymes, amino acids and cytokine. This water is now popular all over the world for its refreshing nutty taste as well as its health benefits.

Any nuts younger than five months of age tend to be bitter in taste and devoid of nutrients. In contrast, mature nuts contain less water, and their endosperm thickens quickly to white edible meat (kernel). Coconut milk obtained from the meat is therefore should not be confused with coconut water. Coconut milk is obtained by grating and grinding this ‘meat’ and passing it through a sieve. It is very high in fat content – a cup of coconut milk has 550 calories whereas coconut water has only 50 calories a cup.

Surprisingly, Coconut water is more nutritious than whole milk. Its crammed with Natural Sugars, Salts, and Vitamins to block out fatigue. Drinking coconut water straight from a green tender coconut in the summer heat is simply divine. Not only is it refreshing, it also has a number of health benefits. Most importantly, coconut water contains less sodium than any other energy drink. See the table below for in depth analysis of nutrients:

Fresh tender coconuts are readily available in the markets in tropical countries year around. However, they require importation into the semitropical and cold regions. Nowadays, ready to use prepared tender coconuts are made available in USA and Canada imported from Thailand and Malaysia.

In the stores, coconut water sold in packets, and bottles. However, their overall nutritional profile may not be up to the mark in terms of vitamins and enzyme levels, since some kind of additives and preservative added in order to enhance shelf life.

Benefits of coconut water:

Coconut water is very beneficial after a bout of diarrhoea, as it replaces fluid loss. It is rich in amino acids, enzymes, dietary fibre, vitamin C and minerals such as potassium, magnesium and manganese; at the same time it is low in cholesterol and chlorides. This fluid is ideal to maintain body fluids when a person gets dehydrated. Coconut water contains a good amount of electrolyte potassium, thus it can replenish the electrolyte composition in body fluids.

Coconut water was used as a “universal donor”, making it identical to human blood plasma. It was used in the Pacific War to save thousands of lives through Coconut IV’s, and emergency plasma transfusions.

Quick energy boost:
Abundant in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, Coconut Water makes a wonderful energy drink. In particular, coconut water has less sugar and sodium content compared to most sports drinks, while packing more Potassium, Calcium, and Chloride, which makes it a better choice to rehydrate, replenish and boost the body's energy levels after any strenuous activity or workout.

Weight Loss
Coconut water is a natural electrolyte and isotonic beverage which help increase the body's metabolism. Therefore, it can greatly benefit people who are struggling with weight issues.
Drinking coconut water helps a person to lose weight as it is low in fat and it keeps a person feeling full. It also reduces food cravings.

Useful in aging spots, wrinkles, and other skin problems
Researchers have found that Cytokinins help regulate the cell growth and their divisions. Coconut Water contains these cytokinins and lauric acid which can minimize the aging of skin cells, balance PH levels, and keep the connective tissues strong and hydrated. Therefore, simply applying ccoconut water onto affected skin areas every night before going to bed may help with acne, age spots, wrinkles, stretch marks, cellulite, and eczema. Within two to three weeks, it clears up the skin.

Cardiovascular health
Coconut water promotes health as it is rich in potassium and it also helps to reduce the risk of hypertension and strokes. According to researchers, individuals with high blood pressure usually have low potassium levels. Therefore, drinking coconut water on a regular basis can be quite effective at regulating blood pressure.

There are several animal studies suggesting coconut water can lower cholesterol and blood pressure, but this research is too preliminary to make claims about it’. But they do agree that coconut water may be a healthier option as compared with other beverages. Similarly, some recent studies have found that coconut water can help increase HDL (good) cholesterol, which makes it a wonderful natural treatment for maintaining good cardiovascular health.

Dehydration
Rich in Potassium and other minerals, Coconut Water helps to regulate our internal fluids and replenish and rehydrate the body. It has been used to treat dehydration caused by dysentery, cholera, diarrhea and stomach flu, and the electrolyte balance and plasma in coconut water has been found to be similar to that of human blood.

Therefore, drinking one cup of Coconut Water twice daily during digestive tract abnormalities, hot temperatures, and after strenuous workouts can help rehydrate the body quickly.

Good in diabetes
It is good for diabetics as it is good in nutrients required by diabetics to keep their sugar levels in control.

Anti viral
If you are suffering from flu or herpes due to some type of viral attack on your body, drinking coconut water is very beneficial as it has anti viral and anti bacterial properties.
Reduces the risk of kidney stones
Due to the minerals, potassium and magnesium, present in coconut water the risk of kidney stones is greatly reduced.

What are the side effects of coconut water?
Fresh coconut water is one of the best natural drinks on the face of the earth. It doesn't have any known side effects unless somebody is prone to having allergic reactions or have severe nut allergies.

It is considered to be safe for children, pregnant, and breastfeeding women. If you are taking potassium supplements it is recommended to regulate your potassium levels since Coconut Water is high in potassium.

NOTE:
Once a coconut is cut open the water should be consumed as exposure to air can result in loss of nutrients. It is low in fat though rich in vitamins and the potassium level is twice the amount found in banana.

Fat facts, saturated or unsaturated what to choose

With healthy foods gaining in popularity, you’ve surely started paying more attention to terms like "fat, saturated fats, unsaturated fatty acid, poly and mono unsaturated fats" etc. Doesn’t it all baffle you? you may be wondering, what is saturated fat & what are unsaturated fats? so, It’s important to know what they mean & what to choose, in your healthy foods or healthy recipes.

Pure fats are found in three broad areas: vegetable oils (corn oil, peanut oil, olive oil), meats (the white layer which outlines the cut of meat) and dairy products. Some fats are found in foods from plants and animals and are known as dietary fat.

saturated fat vs unsaturated fats
what is saturated fat?

Saturated fat is the fat that consists of triglycerides containing only saturated fatty acid radicals Saturated fatty acids have no double bonds between the individual carbon atoms of the fatty acid chain.

Or in other words " It is a fat that contains only saturated fatty acids and is solid at room temperature, and comes chiefly from animal food products. Some examples of saturated fat are butter, lard, meat fat, solid shortening, palm oil, and coconut oil.

what is unsaturated fat
?

An unsaturated fat is a fat or fatty acid in which there is at least one double bond within the fatty acid chain. A fatty acid chain is monounsaturated if it contains one double bond, and polyunsaturated if it contains more than one double bond.

Like oils, these fats have more carbon double bonds. They are more liquid at room temperature. They include most of the vegetable oils such as peanut, safflower, sunflower, soy, corn, flax seed and sesame seed oil.

Some fats are somewhat saturated, including butter and olive oil, for example. These will be hard if you place them in the refrigerator, but will become soft or liquid at room temperature.

The degree of saturation of a fat is not that critical for its nutritional content. However, it is important because the more unsaturated an oil, the faster it goes rancid. Rancid oils can be very harmful to eat.

What to choose?

Some nutritionists dedicate a lot of time, debating whether saturated fats like butter and coconut oil are better than unsaturated oils like soy or canola oil.

In my view, and has been for quite a while, that the fears about saturated fats are quite overblown. Recently, for example, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a review of saturated fat studies from the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of California. The authors concluded that reducing saturated fat does not prolong life or lower the incidence of coronary heart disease.

The authors wrote:

“The conclusion of an analysis of the history and politics behind the diet-heart hypothesis was that after 50 years of research, there was no evidence that a diet low in saturated fat prolongs life…Overall, dietary intervention by lowering saturated fat intake does not lower the incidence of nonfatal coronary artery disease; nor does such dietary intervention lower coronary disease or total mortality.”

This is not the only scientific group to catch on to the truth

In 2002, a report from the US National Academy of Sciences concluded there was no evidence that a diet low in saturated fat prolongs life. They went on to say that the real killer is trans-fatty acids. The report stated, “the only safe intake of trans-fat is zero.”

Meanwhile, the real causes of heart disease are most likely nutritional deficiencies, chlorine in the water we drink, toxic metals in the food, water and air, and lifestyle factors such as how much rest and sleep one gets.

Saturated fats have been eaten for generations, long before cancer and heart disease were common. In fact, there was less cancer and less heart disease when people in America ate more saturated fats.

Think wise............

You don't need to completely eliminate all fat foods, from your diet. In fact, some fats actually help promote good health. But it's wise to choose the healthier types of dietary fat, and then enjoy them — in moderation.

Fats are important for your body because they insulate your nerve cells, balance your hormones, protect you from cold, keep the skin and arteries supple and also lubricate your joints. Fat is essential to your health because it supports a number of your body's functions. Some vitamins, for instance, must have fat to dissolve and nourish your body.

Tips for Making a Great First Impression and Making New Friends Your First Week on Campus

People form an impression of you in class
Your professor and your fellow students will respond to you and perhaps judge you by how you act in your classes. If you're late all the time or if you don't go to class, they notice. They also notice if you come prepared for class, or slink to the back of the room to sit, pay attention, ask thoughtful questions or doze off or spend the class texting.  In high school slack behavior might have been cool; in college it will get you ostracized. Each class has a different set of “rules of engagement,” so be aware of the size, structure, and instructors preferences for behavior.  Learn your classmates’ names and use the formal title to address your professor, for example, “Dr. MacEnulty.”  Last impressions are critical as well so occasionally stay after class and attend your instructor’s office hours and ask questions and initiate discussions around the class topic. It is easier to set a positive impression at the beginning of the semester than try to erase a bad one.

Tips for Making a Great First Impression and Making New Friends Your First Week on Campus

Volunteer, go to activities and be a joiner
If there is a movie night on campus, a student union game night or dorm room function, go! The first week of my freshman year I joined the fencing club, went to a freshman dance though I had been the girl no one ever asked to dance, went to the dorm watermelon eating contest and volunteered to referee the impromptu volley ball game on the campus green. I met great new friends with each activity.
